India is home to some of the most intricate and breathtaking architectural wonders, and among them, the temples of Khajuraho stand as a testament to artistic

mastery, spiritual devotion, and an unparalleled understanding of human expression. Built between the 9th and 12th centuries by the Chandela dynasty, the temples of Khajuraho are world-renowned for their intricate carvings, which depict everything from celestial beings and divine rituals to scenes of daily life, mythology, and human intimacy.

Yet, while Khajuraho has gained global recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, few know that similar temples, equally intricate and mesmerizing, exist in parts of Chhattisgarh—long forgotten by time and overlooked by history.

The Architectural Marvel of Khajuraho

The Khajuraho temple complex originally consisted of about 85 temples, of which only around 25 remain today. These temples are divided into three groups:

The Western Group – Home to the most famous temples, including the Kandariya Mahadev Temple, which is the largest and most intricately decorated.

The Eastern Group – Consisting of Jain temples like Parsvanatha and Adinatha, showcasing the region’s religious harmony.

The Southern Group – Lesser known but equally stunning, including the Duladeo and Chaturbhuj temples.

What sets these temples apart is their incredibly detailed sculptures. The walls, ceilings, and pillars come alive with intricate carvings of gods, goddesses, dancers, musicians, warriors, and lovers—each figure telling a silent, eternal story. These carvings are often mistaken as purely erotic, but in reality, they depict the full spectrum of life, celebrating both the material and spiritual aspects of human existence.

The Forgotten Temples of Chhattisgarh

While Khajuraho’s fame has endured, the temples of Chhattisgarh remain largely unknown, hidden deep in the forests and lost to time. Temples like:

Bhoramdeo Temple – Often called the ‘Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh,’ this stunning structure features sculptures as intricate and sensuous as those in Khajuraho.

Gandai Temple – A lesser-known but equally breathtaking temple with depictions of celestial nymphs, war scenes, and tantric influences.

Madwa Mahal – A temple with strikingly detailed carvings, yet barely mentioned in travel guides.

These temples share the same intricate craftsmanship as Khajuraho but have largely faded from public memory. They remain untouched by commercialization, their stories whispered only by the ancient stones and the rustling wind.

Akalp: A Story Set Against the Mystery of These Temples

My latest book, Akalp, is deeply inspired by these architectural wonders. It takes the reader on a journey through the mesmerizing yet haunting beauty of Khajuraho and its lesser-known counterparts in Chhattisgarh. The protagonist, Anant, a struggling novelist, finds himself drawn into a labyrinth of mystery when he arrives in Khajuraho. As he writes, he begins seeing visions of a mysterious woman—one so vivid that he falls deeply in love with her, unable to tell if she is real or merely a creation of his mind.

His descent into obsession intertwines with a centuries-old mystery—a lost British officer’s journal, a hidden statue, and secrets buried in the depths of time. As Anant loses his grip on reality, his friend Maya desperately tries to bring him back before he crosses the line between imagination and madness.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of these forgotten temples, Akalp is a psychological thriller that explores the fine line between fiction and reality, love and illusion, sanity and insanity.

Explore the Mystery for Yourself

Khajuraho and the forgotten temples of Chhattisgarh are more than just architectural marvels—they are repositories of stories, mysteries, and untold histories. If you’ve ever been fascinated by places that seem to hold echoes of the past, where stone speaks and history lingers in the air, then Akalp will take you on a journey unlike any other.

📖 Read the book and step into a world where imagination becomes reality!
